Within the framework of the „Capital Cutural Agreement“ the „Capital Cultural Fund Berlin“ was established in 1999 by the Federation and Berlin. This fund financially supports individual projects as well as events which are significant for the federal capital Berlin, have national and international vibrancy and are particularly innovative. By funding topical cultural and artistic projects the „Capital Cultural Fund Berlin“ wants to be conducive to the national and international cultural dialogue that shall be picked up and be consolidated. Ventures with an innovative approach are funded, which contribute to the development of the arts, as well as projects that that assimilate and continue momentous traditions. A key criterion for selection is artistic quality with regards to content.

A lot of the history of broadcasting has been written in Berlin. The first German radio station started operating in Berlin, and television broadcasting began here. Five years ago, the Germany-wide transition from analogue to digital broadcasting was heralded. Today, almost 30 radio stations vie for listeners, in addition, every Berliner can produce his or her own programme on Offener Kanal Berlin (Open Channel Berlin). 24h Berlin marks yet another milestone in the history of television: a TV programme broadcast European-wide from Berlin for 24 hours. “The fact that every Berliner can be a part of 24h Berlin makes this project so fascinating,” says Dr. Hans Hege, Director of the MABB. Exciting questions come up for the future of television.

The DEFA Foundation is a nonprofit organisation, established by the
Federal Republic of Germany. It preserves the films of the DEFA
(film studio of the GDR) and makes them accessible to the public as
they are a part of the national, cultural heritage. Through the
allocation of funds, scholarships and prices the DEFA Foundation
fosters the German film culture. Documentaries had a strong tradition at the DEFA. Projects like „Children of Golzow“ by Winfried Junge or „Wittstock Girls“ by Volker Koepp are testimonials of the everyday life in the GDR and have left conspicuous marks in the film heritage of Germany. Time and again, the DEFA Foundation gladly supports innovative documentary film concepts like 24h Berlin which keep record of everyday life and the people in this city.
